June 04, 2022 - Empty Nest

Unfortunately, once again, our little Osprey family decided not to settle in for the season. Both Penny and Griffin were spotted at the nest throughout April carrying out normal nest activity – bringing nesting materials, rearranging the nest, bringing fish back to the nest, and mating. However, they didn't frequent the nest like they have in years past and eventually they just quit showing up all together. Our last official sighting was May 10, 2022. We aren’t exactly sure why, but whatever the reason, we hope to see them next year!

April 12, 2022 - Catch of the Day!

If you look closely at Penny on the perch, you can see the fish Griffin brought for her to eat as he tends to the nest.

April 05, 2022 - "Getting right to it" at the nest!

The female calls the shots for successful mating; she needs to raise her tail and tilt forward so the male can curl his tail under hers and achieve a ‘cloacal kiss’. A male will land on a female’s back many times without this final contact being made. Studies have shown only 30-40% of attempts are successful. Early copulations stimulate the growth of eggs within the female’s ovary and strengthen the pair bond. The last 3 or 4 days before eggs are laid are the most critical for fertilization.
