When temperatures rise, it's important to keep heat safety and conservation in mind to keep you and your family happy and healthy.
Keep HVAC Filters Clean
Be sure to change the necessary filters regularly to keep the system up and running.
Let the Cool Night Air In
Open windows before you go to bed. Just be sure to close the windows before things heat up in the morning.
Use Fans
Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise to circulate cool air. Fill a bowl with ice and position it in front of a large fan for a cool, misty breeze.
Sleep Low
Heat rises so sleeping downstairs or in the basement can help. If you don't have multiple levels, move your mattress to the ground.
Keep Blinds Closed
Invest in blackout curtains or blinds which can block sunlight and unwanted heat from your windows.
Cook Outdoors
Avoid using your oven or stove if you can - they will make your house even hotter. An outdoor grill won't!
Turn Off the Lights
Turn off the lights in rooms that are unoccupied.
Turn Down Your Water Heater
Setting your water heater to 120 degrees will save you 3 to 5% for each 10-degree reduction.
Hang the Laundry Out to Dry
In the summer months, take advantage of the abundant solar energy and hang laundry out to dry. Hopefully they'll smell like a field of cut grass and fresh flowers!
